Safety Engineer Senior -- Track Specialist,
PART TIME 20 hours/week. Shift timing is between 7 pm-7 am; some weekends; cover two shifts per week.

Knowledge, skills, education, and/or experience
. Requires a high school diploma; and
2. Minimum of eight (8) years in Class 1 Track as a track foreman overseeing the installation, inspection, and maintenance of a railroad track system.

Mandatory skills/certification(s) Requirement
1. Railroad track system construction, maintenance, testing, or inspection techniques;
2. Document items of non-compliance;
3. Physically fit and able to walk 5+ miles a day;
4. Safety criteria for track structure and engineering;
5. Federal and State railroad track safety standards;
6. Effectively communicate both verbally and in writing; and
7. Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Access, and Excel.

1. Provides services during 2nd and 3rd shifts during the week (Monday through Friday) and some weekends (Saturday and Sunday).
2. Manages and minimizes the risk of human casualty and societal loss due to train accidents caused by defective conditions of railroad track and structures, or by hazardous working conditions for railroad employees;
3. Inspects and monitors functions of railroad track and structures to assure compliance with federal and State safety standards on four (4) light rail properties under the jurisdiction of NJDOT;
4. Plans and implements a program of periodic inspections to provide full system coverage of the railroad track;
5. Review track geometry test car readings to confirm proper maintenance is being performed;
6. Performs on-ground inspections where defects are indicated to determine the seriousness of the problems and the best means of correction;
7. Prepares reports when necessary, collecting sufficient back-up evidence to support findings;
8. Investigates complaints involving unsafe conditions of track or the other subject areas of responsibility. May interview complainants, railroad officials, and any parties as required for proper investigation of the complaint;
9. Accompanies track crews to verify safety briefings and performs direct observation over track work on the main line or maintenance facility;
10. Reports as necessary on short notice to perform, either individually or as a member of a team, investigations of significant train accidents resulting in serious injury to persons or property damage;
11. Determines probable cause of accident or incident and whether any railroad rules were violated;
12. Attends external audits of the State and provides information as necessary; and
13. Communicates effectively, both verbally and in writing.
